The west coast state of Gujarat is not one of Indi's busiest tourist destinations and although it is quite easy to slot Gujarat in between Bombay and the cities of Rajasthan, few people pause to explre this interesting state.
Gujarat has a long and varied history and a great number of interesting places to visit. If you want to go beyound history into the realm of legend, then the Temple of Somnath was actually there to wintess the creation the univerese! Along the south coast are the sites where many of the great events in Krishna's life took place.

Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, Gujarat's principal city, is one of the major industrial cities in India. It has been called the Manchester ofthe East' due to its many textiles industries Ahmedabad is also very noisy and incredibly polluted also very noisy and incredibly polluted Tilak Rd as Relife gets the author's voted as the most polluted, congested and throughly chotic strip of barely controlled mayhem in the country. Only on Sunday mornings is there any respite.

Daman
Right in the south of Gujarat, the 56-sq km enclave of Daman was along with Diu encleave of Daman was along with Diu taken from the Portuguese at the same time as Goa. For a time Daman and Diu were governed from Goa but both now constitute the Union Territory of Daman & Diu,m which is governed from Delhi.

Baroda 
Baroda was the capital of the princely Gaekwad state prior to Independence. Present-day Vadodara is a pleasant, mediumsized city with some interesting museums and art galleries and a fine park. The city's well-known Fine Arts Collage attracts students from around the country and abroad It's a good place for a short pause.

  Surat
Surat stands on the banks of the River Tapti and was once one of westersn India's mojor ports and trading towns. Two hundred yers ago, it had a bigger population that it does today and was far more important that Bombay. Parsis first settled in Surat in the 12th cengtury they had earler been centred 100km south in Sanjan, where they had fled from Persia five centuries befor. In 1573 the city fell to Akbar after a prolonged siege It then became an important Mughal trading port and also the point of departure for Mecca-bond Muslim pilgrims.
